Head of joint chemical weapons mission to travel to Syria

Listen /

Sigrid Kaag, Special Coordinator of the OPCW-UN Joint Mission on eliminating Syria's chemical weapons programme.

The head of the joint mission that's overseeing the destruction of chemical weapons in Syria will be returning to the country shortly for further talks with the authorities.

Sigrid Kaag, Special Coordinator of the Joint Mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the United Nations made the announcement in a speech in The Hague on Friday.

Kaag was in Damascus last month where she observed first-hand the dedication and hard work of the team tasked with verifying and assisting in the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons stocks.

As the mission's work is taking place in an active war zone, she said security is a priority.

Kaag stated that the Joint Mission is working with the Syrian government and also is in contact with armed opposition groups to ensure that necessary security arrangements are in place.
