Congolese army drives M23 rebels out of eastern DR Congo

The Congolese government has extended its authority to the areas of the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo that have been controlled by the M23 rebel movement.

The Force Commander of the UN Mission in the DR Congo (MONUSCO) General Carlos Alberto Santos Cruz says this follows successful operations of the Congolese army against the rebels.

He spoke with UN Radio's Derrick Mbatha about the situation in the eastern part of the country on Friday.
