Afghanistan is gearing up for a period of transition which begins when foreign forces withdraw from the country at the end of next year.

John Hendra, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women's Policy and Programme Bureau, who visited the country this month, expressed hope that achievements in relation to women's and girls rights are upheld.

Investing in girls' education is one of the ways to contribute to our common future, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in a message on the International Day of the Girl Child, observed on 11 October.

In Niger, where one-third of girls are married before they turn 15, the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) is sponsoring a scholarship programme which keeps girls in school while providing their guardians with a small income.
