UN human rights expert calls for the respect of migrant workers' rights.

The detention, abuse and xenophobic attitudes towards migrant or foreign workers have been making headlines of late.

There's an estimated 232 million migrants worldwide. Half of these migrants are women, according to the UN.

Many states are reluctant to discuss migration because it is related to their territorial sovereignty, François Crépeau, the Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants, told UN Radio's Jocelyne Sambira.

Mr. Crépeau spoke to her ahead of a UN High Level Debate on migration and development starting Thursday, and said he wants to bring the issue regarding the rights of migrant workers to the table.
