E-mail, social media and other online communications are making it easier for people everywhere to share their views.
But in the face of these technological developments, the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) is calling for more international action to protect freedom of expression.
While this basic human right is core to the work of parliamentarians and democracy, the IPU says there are few guarantees to ensure it is respected when it comes to electronic media, access to information and the right to privacy.
