Envoy assures Afghan women of UN support during 2014 elections

As elections approach in Afghanistan, attacks on high profile women are on the rise, according to the United Nations.

In recent weeks and months, there have been several cases of intimidation, abduction and targeted killings of women government officials and public figures. As international forces leave Afghanistan, women are fearful the violence against them might escalate.

The United Nations has pledged to support efforts to ensure women's participation in next year's elections in Afghanistan.

That's what Ján Kubiš, head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), told women activists in the capital, Kabul, this week.
