We need to move quickly to a peace conference and a political solution on Syria: BanListen /
As the international community unites against the threat of chemical warfare, it must also come together to stop the wider war that is destroying Syria, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the General Assembly on Tuesday.
The Secretary-General expressed the hope that "we can build on the diplomatic momentum and move quickly to a peace conference and a political solution".
He stressed the "need to do everything we can to convene the International Conference on Syria in Geneva as soon as possible".
"Now is the moment for the international community, and in particular the Security Council, to uphold its political and moral responsibilities. As I said to the Security Council and repeat now to the General Assembly, this incident must serve as a wake-up call for more determined efforts to resolve the conflict and end the unbearable suffering of the Syrian people. This is our shared responsibility." (27″)
Secretary-General Ban says he looks forward to meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov and US Secretary of State Kerry on 28 September.
And it is his hope they will be able to set a date for the conference at that time, noting that the Joint Special Representative Lakdhar Brahimi continues to prepare the ground for its launch.
