UN envoy calls for more international support for Somalia

Listen /

Nicholas Kay

The UN representative in Somalia is calling for increased financial and military support to the country and for African Union troops serving there.

Nicholas Kay says the AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) desperately needs helicopters and other equipment as it works to wrest parts of the country from the militant group Al-Shabaab, responsible for last weekend's deadly siege on a shopping mall in neighbouring Kenya.

The envoy was in Geneva on Tuesday to address the Human Rights Council . He also expressed his strong condemnation of the attack.

Dianne Penn reports.
