Today is World Tourism Day – the day set aside in the United Nations calendar to celebrate tourism: a sector driving economic growth and development worldwide.

World Tourism Day is being held under the theme: "Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future", in line with the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation.

UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Secretary-General, Taleb Rifai in a message marking the occasion said that "as one of the largest economic sectors in the world, it is the responsibility of the tourism sector to take a leadership role and ensure companies and destinations invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain".

And UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged "tourism establishments to cut consumption and improve waste management". He also called on individuals "to play their part by making environmentally conscious choices when they travel".

World Tourism Day official celebrations were taking place on Friday in the Maldives.
