Secretary-General carefully monitoring Maldives presidential electionsListen / The UN Secretary-General is urging political leaders in the Maldives to continue to allow for a peaceful, inclusive and credible second round of presidential elections later this month.
In a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Ban Ki-moon noted that international and domestic observers had considered the first round of voting, which took place on 7 September, a success.
As none of the four candidates received the required 50 per cent of votes, the presidential elections will move to a second round on 28 September, according to media reports.
The statement said the Secretary-General is carefully monitoring the situation in the Maldives, an island nation located in the Indian Ocean.
Mr. Ban also stressed the utmost importance of the will of the people being respected throughout the process.
