Persons with disabilities can make their own contribution to society, says a senior United Nations official dealing with social policy and development.

Daniela Bas from the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs spoke to reporters on Friday ahead of the first ever meeting of world leaders to discuss disabilities and development.

She said although people with disabilities have been silent for too long, they have developed skills in finding solutions and therefore promoting development.

"This is a group of the society that has been considered for too long a vulnerable group of the society in need of help while on the contrary this is a resource of the society, a resourceful group of the society that can contribute in an enormous way to development. Persons with disabilities themselves have to find solutions on a daily basis to the various obstacles and challenges they face both from a cultural viewpoint, stereotypes and also physical obstacles." Daniela Bas recalled that the General Assembly agreed in December 2012 to convene the High- level Meeting on Disabilities and Development.

She said the focus will be on the future for all including the one billion persons with disabilities around the world.
