New UN Women chief outlines her vision for collaboration and cooperation

Phumzile Mlambo-Ncguka, the new head of UN Women, this week held her first press conference since taking the helm of the agency in July.

She says she will use the countdown to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as an opportunity to make progress in areas such as improving girls' access to education.



Syrian refugee family in limbo in Iraq

The ongoing crisis in their homeland has forced more than two million Syrians to seek refuge in neighbouring countries.

New mother Peroz Ismail, who fled to northern Iraq in August with her family, is happy that her youngest child—a fragile baby girl called Hawler—is now safe.



Romanian ambassador temporarily trades mediation for music

Five Ambassadors to the United Nations have recorded a CD of songs promoting world peace, the proceeds of which will fund a scholarship to the annual World Youth Assembly at the UN in New York.

The project was spearheaded by Ambassador Simona Miculescu of Romania who has had a lifelong love of music.
