China says it is in favour of a UN Security Council resolution to support the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) plan to destroy Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons.

OPCW, the international chemical weapons watchdog, is based in The Hague, Netherlands.

In an address to the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, the Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Wang Yi, said China is ready to make a financial contribution to the OPCW.

"We call on for the early convening of the Geneva II conference and faster progress in a political resolution of the Syrian issue. China seeks no self gains in Syria and does not take side on the Syrian issue. We respect the aspirations and the choice of the Syrian people."

Mr. Yi said China firmly opposes the use of chemical weapons and that the recent use of these weapons in Syria "has met universal condemnation."
