China and European Union discuss cooperation on migration

Listen /

A two-day joint-European Union (EU)-China seminar on mobility and migration concluded in Beijing, China on Friday.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), which hosted the seminar, says it was held under the framework of its "Capacity Building for Migration and Management in China" project.

IOM spokesperson, Jumbe Omari Jumbe says the aim of the seminar was to increase cooperation between the EU and China on migration issues.

"For a long time China has been a country of origin and transit migration. However, China nowadays is increasingly becoming a country of destination for, among others, EU citizens. Rising numbers of Chinese and EU tourists, students and businessmen brings up complex migration issues such as irregular migration, human trafficking and smuggling." (24")

Jumbe Omari Jumbe says more than 100 senior Chinese and European Union officials attended the IOM seminar in Beijing.
