The 2014 elections are at the forefront of political life in Afghanistan: UN envoy

Listen / The top United Nations envoy in Afghanistan has stressed the importance of timely elections for stable leadership transition in the country.

Jan Kubiš, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Afghanistan, on Thursday briefed the Security Council on the situation in the country.

He told the Council that significant progress has been made in technical preparations for the elections in the last three months.

Mr. Kubiš said this includes passage of two key laws, appointments to the two independent electoral management bodies and rollout of the district-level voter registration update.
