Authorities in the Philippines are being urged to do all in their power to bring to justice those behind the recent killings of three journalists in the space of two days.

The call comes from Irina Bokova, Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in a statement on Tuesday.

Freelance photojournalist Mario Sy was shot outside his home in General Santos City, in the south of the Philippines, on 1 August.

His death came two days after the double murder of journalists Bonifacio Loreto and Richard Kho.

The UNESCO chief describes these incidents as "alarming."
