The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Navi Pillay, deplores the loss of life in Egypt and she is calling on all in Egypt to seek a way out of the violence that reportedly killed and injured hundreds of demonstrators.

Elizabeth Throssell, the spokesperson for the UN Human rights office in Geneva, says there is a need for an investigation as to what happened and why people responsible for the violence on any side should be held to account.

She tells UN Radio's Patrick Maigua in Geneva that the High Commissioner is also calling on the Egyptian authorities and security forces to act with utmost restraint and for the people who are protesting to do so peacefully.
