UN condemns killing of civilians in eastern DR CongoListen /
• The UN has condemned the killing of civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The UN refugee agency(UNHCR) says that at least seven civilians have been killed by shells that landed in residential areas during fighting between the Congolese army and the M23 rebel group around the town of Goma. The UN says that targeting civilians is a war crime.
Violence in Central African Republic displaces thousands of people
• Thousands of people in the Central African Republic have fled to the international airport in Bangui to escape violence, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). It says armed groups have increased their attacks on civilians in the Boy-Rabe and Boeing neighbourhoods. UNHCR points out that the general security situation has worsened in the past ten days as a result of arbitrary arrests, torture extortion and armed robberies.
Floods displace over 18,000 people in South Sudan
• Devastating floods have displaced more than 18,000 people from over 1,000 households in South Sudan. UN agencies and the UN mission in the country (UNMISS), have already conducted an assessment in the country. They are providing immediate assistance such as food, cover sheets and medicines to the affected people.
