A UN team investigating the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian crisis will travel to the country "without delay" as soon as the government confirms acceptance of its modalities of work.

That information comes from the Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General in a note to correspondents issued on Tuesday.

It says that over the weekend, the team led by Swedish Professor Ake Sellström had completed all the necessary logistical arrangements for visiting Syria.

Meanwhile, UN Disarmament Affairs chief Angela Kane has continued her consultations with the Syrian government with a view to reaching agreement "as soon as possible" on the modalities essential to ensure the proper, safe and efficient conduct of the mission.

The statement says that once the Government of Syria confirms its acceptance of the modalities, the UN team will depart without delay.
