Syrian exodus into Iraq continues

Syrian Refugees streaming into Kurdistan, Iraq. [UNHCR/G.Gubaeva]

Syrian men, women, and children in unprecedented numbers crossed into Iraq on foot when the Kurdistan Regional Government opened the Peshkhabour pontoon bridge on the 15th of August.

In just one week, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) says over 45-thousand Syrians fleeing the chaos in the country have crossed the bridge into Iraq.

UNHCR says this is certainly one of the biggest crossings of refugees the agency has seen at any time into a neighbouring country during the entire Syria crisis.
