Bangladesh has become the world’s fastest growing market for solar home systems, according to the World Bank. It says that solar energy is not only replacing expensive fuels, but also bringing about social change in the country, thus empowering girls and women.

"Human river" of  Syrians streams into northern Iraq, says UN refugee agency

Syrian refugees streaming to Iraq

About 20,000 Syrians had streamed into northern Iraq by the middle of August, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR). The agency says this is one of the biggest crossings of refugees into a neighbouring country during the Syrian crisis. Many of the refugees told UNHCR that they were fleeing fighting involving various armed groups and increasing tension in northern Syria.

United Nations honours memory of staff who sacrificed for peace

The United Nations on Monday observed World Humanitarian Day to honour the memory of all staff who have made the ultimate sacrifice for peace. This year marks the 10th anniversary of the bombing of the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad in which 22 staff members died. Events have been held around the world to raise awareness about attacks on humanitarian workers who are helping people in need.
