Humanitarian worker in Pakistan

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has repeated his call for greater protection for humanitarian workers.

Speaking in the Security Council on Monday, World Humanitarian Day, Mr. Ban stated that attacks against aid workers are war crimes.

World Humanitarian Day 2013 also marks 10 years since the bombing of UN headquarters in Baghdad in which 22 staff members were killed.

"On this tragic anniversary, I call again for greater respect and protection for humanitarian workers—an asset everywhere. Attacks against humanitarians are a violation of international law. They are war crimes and they are a direct assault on those who we serve…those who need us most."

Mr. Ban said it is an outrage that humanitarian workers should be attacked for providing essential services to people in need regardless of where they are.
