The United Nations will continue to support Pakistan in the fight against terrorism, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told journalists in the country's capital, Islamabad, on Wednesday.

He said Pakistan has paid an enormous price in the lives of the thousands of its citizens who have been brutally murdered by the forces of terrorism and extremism.

Prior to the press conference, Mr. Ban and newly inaugurated Prime Minister Mohammad Nawaz Sharif exchanged views on how the UN and Pakistan can work together to address regional and global challenges.

The Secretary-General said he assured the Prime Minister that the UN will continue to support Pakistan in this fight and in efforts to promote tolerance, understanding and respect for all people.
