Lebanon seeks to reduce its disaster riskListen /
Lebanon is seeking to become the first country in the Arab region to adopt an overarching National Strategy for Disaster Risk Management, according to the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNISDR.
"Lebanon has learnt a great deal from its history of experiencing and dealing with all types of disaster," says Ms. Nathalie Zaarour, the head of Lebanon's Disaster Risk Management Unit.
Lebanon continues to face several ongoing challenges says UNISDR, among them, the conflict in neighbouring Syria, its spill-over onto national territory and the associated influx of refugees, and internal tensions between Lebanon's various communities.
The country is also dealing with poverty, unplanned urbanization and poor public infrastructure and services.
Ms. Zaarour believes this resilience in the face of instability is a characteristic of the country.
