Human rights expert raises alarm over arrest of community activists in Myanmar

More than 70 political prisoners in Myanmar were released from jail in July, a decision in line with President Thein Sein's stated plan to free all prisoners of conscience by the end of the year.

While welcoming the move, a UN independent expert on the human rights situation in the country is concerned about the ongoing detention of activists advocating on behalf of local communities.

To find out more about this situation, UN Radio's Dianne Penn spoke on the line to Buenos Aires, Argentina, with UN Special Rapporteur Tomás Ojea Quintana who is travelling to Myanmar this weekend.
