Conducive atmosphere and international support key to success of Israeli-Palestinian talks: UN Secretary-GeneralListen / The United Nations Secretary-General is urging the international community to seize the moment brought about by the resumption of talks between the Israelis and Palestinians.
Speaking in the West Bank city of Ramallah on Thursday, Ban Ki-moon expressed appreciation for what he described as "the courageous efforts" of both sides in returning to the negotiating table after three years of deadlock.
"I am sure that unfortunately there will be many obstacles, but how to create a conducive atmosphere politically by both sides and with the support of all international partners: that will be the key of this success…This is the right time, and let us seize this moment for the benefit and interests of the Palestinian people and Israeli people so they can live side by side in peace and security. That's our dream and aspiration of the two-State solution."
Mr. Ban participated in the launch of the UN Development Assistance Framework to strengthen provision of essential services to the Palestinian people.
The Secretary-General said he was glad to be visiting the region at this important time.
