WHO stresses long-term benefits of breastfeedingListen /
Breast-milk is the best source of nourishment for infants and young children, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
But although nearly all mothers are physically able to breastfeed, the agency says many are discouraged from doing so because they are misled to believe that infant formula is better for their babies.
Ahead of World Breastfeeding Week, observed 1 – 7 August, WHO has released a study which finds only a handful of countries fully implement an international code that aims to curb aggressive marketing of breast milk substitutes to new mothers.
Dianne Penn asked Dr. Maria del Carmen Casanovas, a Technical Officer at WHO in Geneva, why it appears that countries do not support the 20-year old code.
