UN to remain "at the side of the Afghan people" after 2014: Deputy Secretary-GeneralListen / As Afghanistan gears up for a period of transition following the withdrawal of foreign forces in 2014, the United Nations will remain "at the side of the Afghan people," according to UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson. Mr. Eliasson on Tuesday concluded a five-day visit to the country where he met with President Hamid Karzai and his advisers, as well as parliamentarians, state governors, women's group representatives, civil society and the UN team in the country. Ari Gaitanis at the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) sat down with the Deputy Secretary-General to get his views on continued UN engagement in the country and the elections that are also scheduled for next year.

This mountainous country is one of the poorest in South Asia and its geography is partly to blame. The mountains isolate most of the poorest people here who struggle to feed themselves and ensure they have clean water, adequate sanitation and health care.
