Åke Sellström

The UN disarmament chief and the head of the UN mission that will investigate the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria arrived in the country on Wednesday.

UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Angela Kane and Professor Åke Sellström are in the capital, Damascus, for consultations on the modalities for the proper, safe and efficient conduct of the mission.

Professor Sellström, an accomplished scientist from Sweden, was appointed in March by the UN Secretary-General to head the mission into the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict.

The Secretary-General has repeatedly called on Syria to grant the mission access to the country so that it can carry out its work.
