UN expert urges Syria to enforce anti-child soldier recruitment law

Syrian authorities are being encouraged to enforce a law which forbids the use and recruitment of children.

The call comes from Leila Zerrougui, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict, who on Thursday concluded a visit to Syria and nearby states hosting refugees from the country's ongoing crisis.

The UN expert says she continues to receive information that some armed opposition groups in Syria are using child combatants, despite assurances from some commanders that they would not accept fighters under 18 years old.

She added that children also continue to be detained by both the Syrian authorities and opposition groups, for example on alleged security charges.
