UN commends efforts to quell deadly inter-communal fighting in Guinea

Listen /

The UN Human Rights office is commending authorities in Guinea for their efforts to restore calm following three days of deadly inter-communal violence.

At least 57 people were killed and more than 160 injured in fighting this week between members of the Guerze and Konianke ethnic groups.

The clashes displaced hundreds of people, and looting, road blocks and damage to houses of worship and other property was also reported.

In commending the efforts made by the Guinean government and security and defence forces to restore calm, the UN Human Rights office also recalls the need to uphold human rights principles during law enforcement operations.

The UN Human Rights office adds that it will closely follow the situation.
