Investors increasingly understand that embracing social, economic and environmental responsibility does not mean sacrificing returns on their investment, according to the UN Secretary-General.

Ban Ki-moon was speaking from the floor of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) on Wednesday, where he rang the bell that marks the close of a trading day.

Mr. Ban welcomed NYSE Euronext to the UN Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative which works to enhance corporate transparency on environmental, social, and corporate governance issues.

He said if the world is to achieve a more equitable, prosperous and sustainable future, then more exchanges, investors and companies will need to join forces with governments and civil society.
