Nelson Mandela International Day a time for action and reflection: UN Secretary-General

Listen /

People everywhere are being encouraged to take action on behalf of others this Thursday in celebration of Nelson Mandela International Day.

The appeal comes from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who observes that the commemoration comes at a moment of deep reflection on the life and work of the universally revered leader who remains in hospital.

Nelson Mandela International Day celebrates the birthday and decades of public service of the former South African President who turns 95 on 18 July.

The Secretary-General says as people extend best wishes to Mr. Mandela, they should also give tangible meaning to their feelings of concern by performing good works for others and the planet.

The UN General Assembly will mark Nelson Mandela International Day with an informal meeting.

Among those scheduled to speak are former United States President Bill Clinton; singer, actor and social activist Harry Belafonte, and Andrew Mlangeni, who was imprisoned with Mr. Mandela and remains a close friend.
