Deputy Secretary-General calls for more global partnership on migrationListen / With more people living outside their countries of birth than ever before, migration is "a reality" of the 21st century, according to UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson.
He was speaking during a General Assembly interactive hearing on Monday on the topic of international migration and development.
The Deputy Secretary-General called for a reinvigorated global partnership where migrants' contributions help to create jobs, trade and wealth.
"We need to coordinate our national migration policies to ensure that labour market and development considerations are taken into account when planning future migration. This means that we are to mainstream migration into national sectoral policies and plans."
Representatives from NGOs, civil society and the private sector are taking part in the hearings which will also address issues such as migrant labour and mobility, and migrant rights and protection.
