• A new United Nations peacekeeping mission for insurgent-beset Mali was launched on the first of July as troops from a previous, African-led international force officially donned the blue berets that identify the operations of the world organization.
African countries battle deadly tsetse fly with help from UN atomic energy agency
• For thousands of years the tsetse fly has been the cause of deaths in humans and livestock in Africa. Now with the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the use of the Sterile Insect Technique, some African countries are winning their fight to control the pest.
ECOSOC focuses on international financial and trade institutions
• The economic slowdown in the world’s major economies has not diminished, according to Nestor Osorio, President of the UN Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC. In fact, new medium term risks have emerged and pose a threat to global financial stability. Innovative ways to address the problem were the subject of the opening session of the annual meeting.
