As the conflict continues in Syria United Nations humanitarian agencies and their partners have appealed for more than $5 billion to help the growing number of people in need.

The United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) says the funds are needed to help the Syrians displaced within their country and those who have been forced to flee to neighbouring countries to the end of 2013.

In addition, the governments of Lebanon and Jordan need $800 million to keep up with the needs of the growing number of Syrian refugees.

Derrick Mbatha reports.
