This week the United Nations passed a major milestone in its engagement in Somalia by launching the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM).

That's what UN Deputy Secretary-General Jan Eliasson said during the briefing to the Security Council as it met to discuss the Horn of Africa country on Thursday.

The meeting of the Security Council was presided over by United Kingdom Minister for Africa, Mark Simmonds and attended by Somalia's first female Foreign Minister Fauzia Yusuf Haji Adan.
