The UN Secretary-General is calling on countries to work together to end torture globally and ensure that victims are compensated.

In a message marking the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture , observed on 26 June, Ban Ki-moon also urges governments to support the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.

The fund awards grants for the provision of medical, psychological and social assistance, as well as legal aid and financial support to torture survivors and their families.

It was established by the General Assembly in 1981 and reaches approximately 70,000 people each year.
