The attack this week on the UN headquarters in Mogadishu was "an act of blatant terrorism" and "a desperate attempt" to knock Somalia off the path of recovery and peace building, according to the top UN official in the country.

However, UN Special Representative Nicholas Kay stressed that the organization remains determined to stand by the Somali people.

Just days after taking the helm at the UN Mission in Somalia this month, the British diplomat connected with what he described as a "very vibrant, very active" network of women activists that's working to promote the rights of women and girls.
