• The head of the UN Political Office in Somalia, Dr. Augustine Mahiga has completed his mission. Dr. Mahiga, who accomplished his task in three years, says the first phase of his mission was to make peace in the midst of a very serious internal conflict. Nicholas Kay from the United Kingdom has taken over from the Tanzanian diplomat.
A programme controls animal diseases in Kenya and Uganda
• Pastoralist communities in Kenya and Uganda depend on livestock for their livelihoods. Animal diseases, which spread across borders, can wipe out these livelihoods. The Intergovernmental Authority on Development and the UN agriculture agency have started a programme to harmonize animal health care in the two countries.
African countries do better in job creation but challenges remain
• There is rising employment in the emerging and developing countries as the global economy recovers from the financial crisis, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO). In its latest report, the ILO says inequalities are also narrowing in these countries. However, it adds, the gap between rich and poor in most low and middle-income countries remains wide.
