The ongoing conflict in Syria is a major catastrophe that tests the international community's resolve to protect civilians caught in war.

That's what the chairperson of the United Nations Commission on Syria said as he presented the panel's latest report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva on Tuesday.

Paulo Pinheiro warned that Syria is in a free fall with government forces, pro-government militias and anti-government armed groups conducting hostilities in a manner that violates the laws of war.

There are also concerns that chemical weapons have been used in the conflict.
