Wakhan Valley

A failing irrigation system in the mountains of Tajikistan worries farmers who struggle to protect their land and livelihoods in the central Asian country.

With the help of a sustainable land management project supported by the United Nations and the Global Environment Facility, a network of canals that connects the water source from the Panj River to the farmlands and orchards has been repaired, allowing the people of the town of Ishkashim to preserve their unique environment. UNHCR chief calls on states to respect non-refoulement after North Koreans deported from Laos

There’s grave concern over the safety and security of nine North Koreans who were reportedly deported from Laos to China. According to the UN refugee agency – UNHCR, it received information that the group of nine – including five children – were arrested in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic on 10 May and deported to the People’s Republic of China on 27 May. Donn Bobb reports.

According to ESCAP, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, there are 650 million persons living with disabilities in the Asia/Pacific region. Millions of them are children. In the annual State of the World's Children report, the UN Children's Fund, UNICEF, is calling for the inclusion of children with disabilities in discussions and decisions about development. Derrick Mbatha has the story.
