Secretary-General celebrates intergenerational connections on International Day of FamiliesListen /
The UN Secretary-General is calling for more support for initiatives that promote intergenerational solidarity to build a healthier world.
In a message on the International Day of Families, observed on 15 May, Ban Ki-moon highlighted how communities benefit from programmes that provide opportunities for young and old people to bond.
He said families hold societies together, and intergenerational relationships extend this legacy over time.
Mr. Ban also reflected on the ways social and economic trends affect families; for example, youth unemployment, lack of affordable and quality childcare, and inadequate pensions for older persons.
These challenges, he said, make family support more important than ever.
