Secretary-General calls for end to extremist attacks in NigeriaListen /
The continued violence and insecurity in north-eastern Nigeria remain a concern for the UN Secretary-General.
In a note issued on Wednesday by his Spokesperson, Ban Ki-moon said the situation poses a threat to peace and security in the country.
Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has declared a state of emergency in three north-eastern states after a series of attacks by Islamic insurgents.
The Secretary-General called on all extremist groups to cease their attacks, and reiterated his firm conviction that no objective can ever justify the use of violence.
He also underscored the need for all concerned to fully respect human rights and to safeguard the lives of all Nigerians.
