Road fatalities are highest in AfricaListen /
The death rate from road accidents in Africa is the highest in the world, according to Dr Wilson Odero, a Public Health Specialist from Moi University in Kenya.
He says one of the major reasons is under-development in terms of road infrastructure. He also cites poor vehicle design and poor management of traffic as culprits.
“And of course poverty. A lot of people don't have vehicles – they walk. And there is no design meant for people who are walking. They are mixed in traffic – the slow moving traffic sharing inadequate roads with fast-moving traffic is causing considerable conflicts and resulting in a lot of road crashes.”
Dr. Odero spoke to UN Radio on the sidelines of a symposium for road Safety Week, observed from the 6-12 of May.
