Lieutenant-General Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz

A veteran military officer from Brazil has been appointed Force Commander at the UN Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).

Lieutenant-General Carlos Alberto Dos Santos Cruz brings more than 40 years of national and international military experience to the post.

The Lt-Gen. had previously served with the United Nations in Haiti, where he had introduced social activities such as sports events for young people.

Speaking to UN Radio on Friday, he said people are the main focus of peacekeeping.

"It's very important to understand that the final objective is to produce peace, and the most important is the people. You need to work to create a special environment, not only military based. You need to do everything, all your obligations, all the tasks you have in the mandate, but you need to do much more than that."

Prior to his appointment, Lt-Gen. Dos Santos Cruz served as Special Adviser to the Minister of the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs within the Presidency of Brazil.

He succeeds Lt-Gen.Chander Prakash Wadhwa of India, who completed his assignment in March.
