Latest session of indigenous forum opens at UN headquartersListen /
Thousands of indigenous people have once again gathered at United Nations Headquarters for the latest session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.
The forum was established more than a decade ago in response to indigenous demands for high-level representation at the United Nations.
The UN describes the indigenous as people who have retained social, cultural, economic and political characteristics that are distinct from those of the dominant societies in which they live.
