The International Labour Organization (ILO) has welcomed the signing of a workplace safety agreement in Bangladesh which comes in the wake of the building collapse that killed more than 1,000 people.

The UN agency praised trade unions, clothing brands and retailers worldwide for supporting the Accord on Building and Fire Safety.

The ILO says urgent improvement in workplace safety requires the industry to work on implementing an action plan that supports the vital role of government and employer and worker organizations in Bangladesh.

The ILO adds that it stands ready to help ensure the effective implementation of the initiative and coordination with national organizations.
