Human security aims at improving people's livesListen / Government ministers, diplomats and senior United Nations officials gathered for a meeting on human security on Wednesday afternoon.
In his opening remarks UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned that the meeting took place at a time of great turmoil.
He said the global economy is in crisis, the environment is under threat and too many people around the world are living in uncertainty.
At the same time, the UN chief added, there are conflicts where warring parties are targeting civilians and violence is a problem even in peaceful countries with women and girls especially at risk.
