Trafficking in human beings is an illegal activity that generates over $30 billion a year and affects more than 20 million people, according to United Nations figures.

The General Assembly on Monday held a high-level meeting on the Appraisal of the Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons.

The meeting brought together senior United Nations and government officials as well as some of the survivors of trafficking who are now in the forefront in the global campaign to end it.
